Have you ever had a stuffy nose, sore throat, coughing or wheezing, burning eyes, or skin rash that wouldn’t quite go away and seemed to be unexplainable? Unfortunately, it could’ve been due to mold in the area.
Let’s discuss what mold is and why it can be so problematic to your health and home.
What is mold?
Molds are a natural part of the environment and can be found almost anywhere that moisture and oxygen are present. There are two types of molds that can be present: allergenic and toxigenic. Allergenic molds cause and produce allergies and allergic reactions such as asthma attacks. Toxigenic molds produce toxic substances that can lead to dangerous or even deadly health conditions. This is sometimes referred to as “toxic mold”.
Mold will grow where there is moisture, including around windows or pipes, anywhere there has been a flood, or where any type of leak or spill has happened. Mold can grow on surfaces including paper or cardboard, ceiling tiles, wood, wallpaper, insulation, drywall, carpet, and upholstery. Mold can travel from the outside to the inside of your home via clothing, shoes, bags, and even pets.
Health Problems
Mold spores are microscopic. They cannot be seen with the human eye but can cause health problems for humans and pets, especially those with compromised immune systems or existing respiratory issues.
Molds can produce allergens, irritants, and mycotoxins that can cause stuffy and runny nose, sore and scratchy throat, watery eyes, coughing, wheezing, burning eyes, skin rash, and trouble breathing.
